Stuart built a six-room lodge and converted
the small guesthouse to two separate
rooms, providing a total of eight rooms for
visitors. The rondavel (a cylindrical, single-room house with thatched roof), which
mainly served as overflow dormitory when
only the guesthouse was available, was
then converted to a dining room and bar.

The Fish
On the fish-collecting front, Stuart
introduced the majority of the Malawi
species currently available in the trade.
Of course, being the sole exporter for
15 crucial years, it would be kind of
par for the course, but Stuart placed a
lot of effort into exploring new areas
and identifying potential new species. I
was lucky in that he had me do some of
the exploring; literally hundreds of new
species were thus discovered and many
of them made available to hobbyists. In
recognition of his efforts, two species were
named after him: Aulonocara stuartgranti
and Iodotropheus stuartgranti—the former
being a highly popular species with
countless geographical variants, and the
latter a rare species that has not yet been
established in the hobby.
When the civil war in Mozambique ended
in 1992, Stuart’s boats, fuel, and employees
were involved in repatriating thousands of
Mozambicans who had fled the country during
the war. The effort lasted for months, during
which time Stuart’s divers got acquainted
with the Mozambique shoreline and its
authorities. In exchange for Stuart’s goodwill,
he was permitted to collect fishes along the
Mozambique coast,
