are legal to keep—can be trained to take pellets and frozen food. That
should probably be the staple food, and the beefheart can be a special
supplement each day.
I have one upside-down catfish in a community tank
with a lot of community fish, as well as some cories.
I like him so much that I would like to add more to
on tank. Will he get along with others of his species?
How do you tell males from females? I am not sure that mine
really is a male.
The most common fish called the upside-down catfish
is Synodontis nigriventris, and it is a great community
catfish that will get along with its own kind. In fact,
they are not happy alone and prefer to forage in schools,
r insect larvae on the underside of leaves and driftwood.
This member of the African catfish family Mochokidae is probably the
most popular of its family and genus. You can distinguish females from
males by their more rotund appearance, and they are usually larger and
lighter in coloration, too.
Is the long tail of the male swordtail the result of
selective breeding, or do these tails occur on males
Actually, the swords on the males in the wild are often
more impressive than the swords on the individuals
from some of the most highly bred strains. In selecting
for color or long fins, or some other trait, the breeders
e trademark sword on the fish they selected for breeding.
So how does the selecting take place in nature? It turns out that
the situation is something like the peacock’s tail. It is of little use to
survival, but it attracts females. Everything else being equal, the male
with the biggest sword leaves the most offspring in the wild. But there
are counterbalancing influences. If the sword slows the male down too
much and makes him less agile, he doesn’t leave many young because
predators get him.

Even with the opposing forces in regard to selection in the wild, the
wild fish generally have the best swords—and sometimes they even
have better color. Apparently, color sometimes has an appeal to female
Where can I get information on Benitochromis
nigrodorsalis More important, how can I get some of
There are a couple of reasons that information is
hard to come by on this particular species. For one
thing, it is a recently (2001) described species.
Another reason this cichlid is hard to get is that it
the entire animal, and they get more complete nutrition that way.
Beefheart has been popular with aquarists for two reasons: it’s
cheap, and it is not riddled with fat. The growth of fish fed copious
amounts of beefheart can be spectacular, but for their overall health
there should be supplementary foods. Or better yet, the beefheart
should be supplementary.
Some hobbyists make up their own formulas, shredding the beefheart
and mixing in nutritional dry and frozen foods. Most of us don’t like
to add that to our schedule. But piranhas and snakeheads—where they
