Got my first tank for my 10th birthday. That was 56 years ago. I’ve
had all kinds of freshwater and marine tanks. I’ve had many favorites
from time to time, but I’d have to say freshwater angels have been my
About 30 years. My favorite setup was a 54-gallon (slightly)
brackish vivarium with mudskippers, archers, and reedfish. Close
second was my 160-gallon indoor pond with gars and bichirs, and
plenty of different water plants.
I got my first 10-gallon tank on my 6th birthday. But being truly
serious about the hobby for about 20-plus years, I have had lots
of favorite tanks but my favorite at the moment is a Characodon
lateralis “Los Berros” (rainbow goodeid) setup.
About 37 years now, almost without interruption. Started with a
glass jar with a couple of guppies as a kid and have had numerous
fish tanks since then—always planted.
My father gave me “the bug,” and I’ve kept fish from age 6 (I am
now 45). My favorite setup was a bitterling tank when I was a teen.
Bred them by accident and have had many since.

65 years! Favorite was a 20 long, fully planted, with angels and catfish.
32 years of experience and numerous setups. It’s hard for me to pick

and my planted angelfish setup.
The love started early; when I was about 7 years old my mom had
a 55-gallon with Pegasus cats, then angels. My dad is a saltwater
fisheries habitat biologist. I started my own tank (Malawi cichlids)
at 22, ran a salt and freshwater aquarium store for 5 years, and now
just have two 55’s, soft freshwater, with plants and Amazonian fish.
21 years, and easily my 50-gallon planted community. Pinstripe red

Since I was in 1st grade—over 45 years—I have kept goldfish,
a freshwater community, African cichlids, saltwater tropical,
freshwater natives, and a koi pond.

Started age 8 with indigenous cichlids and minnows. 33 years later
still going strong. My all-time favorite is planted discus.
Since 1975, and my favorites were my tank of kribensis; they
have such personalities. Next had to be my dogface puffer in my

While putting this issue together, it was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod, co-founder of Tropical Fish Hobbyist Magazine and TFH Publications, Inc., who passed away May 15 of this year in Zurich, Switzerland, just a few weeks before his 90th birthday. TFH was founded in 1952 by my uncle Herb and my father Alan Axelrod, who passed away 15 years
ago. I would like to thank the entire pet industry, and my colleagues in the aquatics segment in particular, for their
condolences and support.
We dedicate this special anniversary issue celebrating 65 years of
TFH’s publication to Dr. Axelrod’s memory. His obituary will be posted
online at tfhmagazine.com.
