Star Polyp Invasion!
I am having a problem with
green star polyps overtaking
my reef tank. Are there any
good control methods?
Green star polyps (GSP) are
generally viewed as desirable
in the aquarium, but they can
quickly reach plague proportions.
Controlling them can be achieved through
several methods. The simplest is manual
removal. A flat-head screwdriver or similar
tool can be used to peel a small piece of the
star polyps upward off the rock surface.
Once you have this little finger hold, you
can use it to peel large sections away from
the live rock. These peeled sections can be
attached to pieces of rubble and traded.
However, any sections left on your desirable
live rock will eventually regenerate.
Many of the common cures for Aiptasia
pest anemones, including various
commercial chemicals, will also work for
green star polyps. One of the most effective
Green star polyps can proliferate to the point of becoming a nuisance in an aquarium.
