Separating Fish
Some people prefer to isolate pregnant
females, and one way to do this is to use
breeding traps, which generally keep the
female in a small area but include holes
large enough for fry to escape through.
When I’m having trouble with a particular
fish and suspect that it is actually breeding
but the fry are being eaten, I will usually
isolate the individual to a heavily planted
tank. Sometimes I find that bringing fish,
either as groups, pairs, or just females, into
tubs outside during appropriate weather
may help.
Rewards of Being a
Livebearer Breeder
Breeding livebearers is a very interesting
aspect of the hobby and can be quite
rewarding. Most livebearers are reasonably
easy to care for—although, of course,
individual fish requirements should be
researched and a suitable environment
prepared before new fish are actually
purchased.
