have changed my mind for the simple reason
that so many people have had success with
I think there are several reasons for this success.
For one thing, in the smaller tanks weekly partial
water changes are not a big hardship, as the tanks
are small, and it is easy and inexpensive to mix
up a batch of synthetic sea water for such a small
partial water change.
Also, dealers sometimes set up these nano
tanks for their customers, selecting the proper
lighting, invertebrates, and fish. That’s a big
advantage right there if you can find a dealer
who provides this service, as most people try
to crowd their tanks with too many fish or
fish that are too large.
The overwhelming advantage of nano
reef tanks, though, is that they allow even

neophytes to successfully jump right into
reef tanks. As pretty as marine fish are, the
invertebrates are the true glory of the ocean.
For people who want a fish
with personality, I want to put
in a plug for the flame hawk.
I have one in my reef tank, and he stays
up at eye level, hopping from rock to rock,
apparently very interested in what goes on
outside the tank. You normally warn about
their preying upon small crabs and even
brittle stars, but so far mine has been fine in
that respect, and he is my favorite fish.
I am glad you are enjoying
your flame hawkfish
For other readers, I should
mention that hawkfish are fishes of the
family Cirrhitidae. These are predatory fish
that get the name “hawkfish” from their
method of predation. They sit up on the side
of a “cliff” (a coral or rock), ever vigilant,

and swoop down opportunistically on prey.
The prey can be small fish or invertebrates
that show movement. I’m glad that yours
has been a solid citizen in that respect. It
helps to keep them well fed, but sometimes
instinct overrules even a full stomach.
Hawkfish in general seem to have a curious
nature. In the wild, it would be surveying the
coral area all around its perch. So its view of
you is as a part of the surrounding reef, and
you would be of particular interest since you
are always around when the dinner bell rings.
In any case, I am glad that other
people appreciate hawkfish, as they are
generally hardy aquarium specimens,
and they have excellent appetites. As you
mention, besides being pretty, they are
loaded with personality!
